The renewed escalation of hostilities between the United States and Iran is increasing global geopolitical uncertainty, with wider implications for international trade and the wine sector.<\/p>

While the direct impact on Italian wine exports remains limited in overall volume terms, indirect consequences are becoming increasingly significant, affecting international logistics, transportation costs, supply chain planning and business confidence in the most exposed markets.<\/p>

Impacted markets: slower trade flows and increased caution<\/strong><\/p>

In regions directly affected by the conflict, commercial exchanges are experiencing a significant slowdown, with some markets recording an estimated contraction of -10% to -20% in Italian wine shipments, according to EFI Observatory data.<\/p>

The current geopolitical environment suggests a more cautious approach from operators over the coming months, with potential negative effects on trade flows and local distribution channels. The duration of this slowdown will largely depend on the ability to contain the escalation and restore greater international stability.<\/p>

Logistics and cost pressures<\/strong><\/p>

One of the most immediate consequences of the current tensions concerns the security and continuity of key international shipping routes, particularly those connected to the Red Sea area and the Suez Canal.<\/p>

According to EFI Observatory estimates, average shipping times have already increased by approximately +8%, while transportation costs have risen by around +2%, creating additional pressure on exporters, especially those serving long-distance and overseas markets.<\/p>

Global demand remains resilient<\/strong><\/p>

Despite the increasingly complex international scenario, global demand for Italian wine continues to demonstrate resilience. Strategic markets such as the United States, Canada and Japan are maintaining positive momentum, with estimated growth ranging between +0.5% and +3%.<\/p>

The strong geographical diversification of Italian wine exports remains a key strength, allowing companies to offset potential slowdowns in more exposed regions by leveraging opportunities in more stable and high-potential markets.<\/p>

Outlook: slower growth, but continued opportunities<\/strong><\/p>

In the short term, the evolution of the conflict may result in a longer period of uncertainty than previously expected, with increased market volatility and further pressure on logistics costs.<\/p>

However, the medium-term outlook for Italian wine remains positive. As the geopolitical situation gradually stabilises and global demand continues to evolve, exports are expected to return to a growth trajectory, with renewed opportunities in the second half of 2026.<\/p>
