Italy\u2019s 2026 harvest is already well underway, and the country is heading into an unusually early vintage.<\/strong> In many areas, harvesting has started 7\u201314 days ahead of the usual schedule<\/strong>, driven by an exceptionally warm summer that has accelerated grape ripening.<\/p>

The early signals are encouraging, particularly from a quality perspective. Grapes are generally healthy, showing good concentration and a promising balance between sugar, acidity and aromatic expression<\/strong>. Several regions are already reporting very positive, and in some cases excellent, quality prospects.<\/p>

But 2026 will not be an even vintage.<\/p>

Heat, drought, hail and other extreme weather events are affecting yields<\/strong>, with significant differences from one area to another. While some regions expect production to remain broadly in line with 2025 or even increase slightly, others are facing substantial local losses. The final picture will become clearer in September, as later-ripening varieties reach the vineyards and wineries.<\/p>

From north to south, however, one message is already emerging: quality is shaping up to be the defining feature of the 2026 harvest<\/strong>. From Franciacorta and Trentino-Alto Adige to Piedmont and Veneto, and from Tuscany to Sicily and Sardinia, many wine regions are reporting favourable conditions, while having to manage faster ripening and, in some areas, increasing water stress.<\/p>

The market context adds another layer to the picture. As of 31 July 2026, Italian wineries held approximately 42.6 million hectolitres of wine<\/strong>, 6.9% more than a year earlier, alongside around 3.1 million hectolitres of must.<\/p>

The 2026 vintage therefore begins with a dual challenge: protecting quality while maintaining market balance<\/strong>.<\/p>

For producers, trade professionals and international buyers, this is a vintage worth watching closely. In an increasingly unpredictable climate, it will not simply be about producing more or less. It will be about producing well, reading the market and turning regional differences into value.<\/strong><\/p>

The EFI Observatory will continue to monitor the progress of the harvest in the coming weeks, as the picking of late-ripening varieties will provide a clearer picture of volumes and the prospects for the new vintage.<\/strong><\/p>
